She also uses very negative words such as â€Å"littered† and â€Å"grimy† which suggests that she didn’t like it and didn’t want to be there. It also suggests that the place was dirty and not pleasant, which, perhaps, was not what she was used to. She tells of how the soldiers were â€Å"dumped†, this verb suggests that they were not respected and were just objects in the whole scheme of things; the soldiers were all the same. It also suggests that Brittain is upset about it as she may think that they should be treated better. Brittain’s sentence structure isn’t varied and is long. The sentences seem to drag on; this, therefore, suggests that she felt the war dragged on because the pauses were far away and short like the war. The scene Brittain paints about what she sees is very clear, she tells of how there are â€Å"humped sandhills bristled with tufts of spiky grass† this imagery suggests that it is a comparison to the soldiers and how they, too, are hunched over so it looks like they have humps on their backs. The tufts of spiky grass could suggest that they relate to the way the shells land, a little bit all over the place but has a way of going where you least expect. Brittain talks about the fear she has for the war, she tells of how she would imagine things that actually don’t happen such as hearing â€Å"the sound of distant guns† this suggests that the sound is so loud it rings in her ears making her think she’s hearing it when she actually isn’t. Or that the sound is just so recurrent that even when there are no guns, it sounds like there are. She also thinks that she can feel earthquakes when in fact she is just feeling the vibrations of the guns and shells, she says how it feels like â€Å"the slight rustling that comes†¦/† â€Å"/†¦with imminent thunder† this suggests that she trembles when she hears it just like the thunder, implying that she is afraid of the thought of the guns like she’s afraid of the thought of thunder. Brittain talks in the 1st person making it more realistic especially when talking about fear, it makes it seem much more real. She talks about how the war is like titanic, this is because titanic sunk in 1912 so would be still a very big part of their lives and fresh in their minds. She says how the scene was â€Å"illimitable death† this suggests that she believed that she would be surrounded by war’s deaths forever. It also suggests that she feels that they are not winning therefore people won’t ever stop dying which is what she fears. She tells of how Etaples had become the â€Å"heart of the fiercest living† this suggests that she is proud of all the soldiers and what they were doing. The use of the noun â€Å"heart† suggests that she feels love towards the men and also the men to one another. It also suggests that they have not lost all humanity because they can still beat the Germany. Brittain uses the poem â€Å"James Lee’s Wife† by Robert Browning. By doing this she is able to reflect her feelings in a different way, it suggests that she could not find the right words to convey how she was feeling therefore implies that she perhaps needed another’s words to tell others how she truly feels, she believes that she cannot â€Å"draw one beauty into our hearts, and keep it changeless† this suggests that she cannot go back to how she thought the war was before she came here because it’s far worse than she expected. More recent investigations and developing technologies have shown that Torralba and Ambrona do not have identical stratigraphies, and were occupied at least 100,000 years apart. Further, research has rejected much of Howell and Freemans ideas of the site. Although Torralba and Ambrona turned out not at all to be what their primary excavators thought, the importance of the two sites lies in the notion of ancient butchering and how that stimulated the development of techniques to define what evidence would support that type of behavior. Recent research at Ambrona has also supported the North African origin for the Iberian Acheulean during the Middle Pleistocene. Cutmarks and Taphonomy Howell and Freeman believed that the two sites represented the mass killing and butchering of extinct elephants, deer, and cows that took place at the side of a lake approximately 300,000 years ago. Elephants were driven into the marshes by fire, they hypothesized, then dispatched with wooden spears or stones. Acheulean bifaces and other stone tools were then used to batter open the animal skulls; sharp-edged flakes were used to slice meat and disarticulate joints. American archaeologist Lewis Binford, writing about the same time, argued that although the evidence didnt support butchering or killing, it did support scavenging behavior: but even Binford didnt have the technological advances that have dissolved the previous interpretations. Howell based his argument for hunting and butchery on the presence of cutmarks- longitudinal slices evident in the surfaces of the bones. This argument was tested in a seminal article by American archaeologists Pat Shipman and Jennie Rose, whose microscopic investigations first began to define the diagnostic features of cut marks. Shipman and Rose found that there was a very small percentage of genuine cutmarks in the bone assemblages, accounting for less than 1% of the bones they looked at. In 2005, Italian archaeologist Paolo Villa and colleagues described further taphonomic studies of the faunal assemblage from Ambrona and concluded that while bone and stone artifacts show varying degrees of mechanical abrasion, there is no clear evidence of either hunting or butchery. Animal Bone and Tool Assemblages Animal bone from the Lower Complex levels from Ambrona (dated to 311,000-366,000 based on Uranium Series-Electron Spin Resonance U/ESR) are dominated by extinct elephant bone (Elephas (Palaeoloxodon) antiquus), deer (Dama cf. dama and Cervus elaphus), horse (Equus caballus torralbae) and cattle (Bos primigenius). Stone tools from both sites are associated with the Acheulean tradition, although there are very few of them. According to Howell and Freemans two sets of excavations, ivory points were found at both sites: Torralbas assemblages included 10 and Ambrona 45, all made from elephant tusks. However, Villa and DErricos 2001 investigations of those points revealed a broad variability in length, width, and stem length, inconsistent with patterned tool production. Based on the presence of eroded surfaces, Villa and DErrico concluded that none of the points are indeed points at all, but rather are natural remnants of elephant tusk breakage. Stratigraphy and Dating A close examination of the assemblages indicates that they were likely disturbed. Torralba assemblages, in particular, appear disturbed, with up to one-third of the bones exhibiting edge-rounding, a characteristic thought to be the result of the erosive effects of having been rolled in water. Both occupations are large in area, but with a low density of artifacts, suggesting that the smaller and lighter elements have been removed, again suggesting dispersal by water, and surely by a combination of displacement, redeposition, and perhaps mixing between adjacent levels. Research at Torralba and Ambrona Torralba was discovered during installation of a railway in 1888 and first excavated by the Marques de Cerralbo in 1907–1911; he also discovered the Ambrona site. The two sites were first systematically excavated by F. Clark Howell and Leslie Freeman in 1961–1963 and again in 1980–1981. A Spanish team led by Santonja and Perez-Gonzalez ran an interdisciplinary research project at Ambrona between 1993–2000, and again between 2013–2015. The most recent excavations at Ambrona have been part of work identifying evidence for an African origin of the Acheulean stone tool industry in the Iberian peninsula between MIS 12-16. Ambronas levels dated to MIS 11 included characteristic Acheulean handaxes and cleavers; other sites supporting an African Acheulean include Gran Dolina and Cuesta de la Bajada among others. This represents, say Santonja and colleagues, evidence of an influx of African hominids across the straits of Gibraltar approximately 660,000-524,000 years ago. Favorite Trip

Topic #12 I have visited many places in my lifetime, from as far east as Florida to the topics of Kauai. There were two places during my travels that have stuck out to me the most though. Visiting Mason City, Illinois, a little town of twenty-two hundred people and visiting family in Beverly Hills, California, there are bound to be some differences but also, some similarities on the subject. The majority of people in the United States, even internationally, know what Beverly Hills is.It is the place to be for amazing shopping, fancy cars, big houses, and the place to go to see celebrities. This little town in Southern California is very materialistic. When visiting, I almost felt as though I had to dress and act like these people just to fit into their society. Now, Mason City is my kind of vacation. Back in the country, life really does move slower and it is much simpler. What you wear and what you look like do not matter.The older and more broke down your truck is, the better off y ou are for mud bogging and road tripping to surrounding towns and the creeks. Everybody knows everybody and where each other live. In Beverly Hills, there are a wide variety of job professions. You could be virtually anything your heart desired, from being a banker to being a personal assistant to someone famous. The work that they do in California is on the opposite end of the spectrum compared to the work they do in Illinois.In Mason City, you either works on some kind of a farm, be it a pig farm or a corn farm, or you work for the local HULL Trucking Company. Obviously, there are other professions there otherwise there would be no local businesses or education, etc. That is virtually impossible. The job choices in both places are ways that people make their livings and contribute to our society. Beverly Hills is an urban jungle, full of high rises and the lovely smell of a big city. There are loud noises and a lot of vehicle and foot traffic through its winding streets and hills. I’m pretty sure that the drivers of these fancy vehicles on these winding streets make up their own rules of the road, almost like they are more obligated than others. In M. C. there is one road in and out of the town, Highway 65. There are not even any traffic lights, and only a few stop signs. Most roads there only require you to yield and make sure there is no one coming. People that are from Central and Southern Illinois say that Chicago and its surrounding suburbs should be considered an entirely different state. I believe that this is true.Central Illinois is rolling plains and a horizon as far as the eye can see. The smell of fresh air and the surroundings, make it an absolutely beautiful place to visit or to even live. Illinois is probably where I will end up some day, owning a farm and lots of animals. It was and still is my favorite place to visit in the United States. But, having been visiting California all of my life, it has a special place in my heart. These pla ces are polar opposites in every way imaginable. I like being able to visit different ways of life.
